On Mandalorian and Grogu, we were tasked at Tippett Studio with building two incredibly detailed stop-motion droid puppets, along with an environment for the production.
My role included collaborating with Doug Chiang and the Lucasfilm Art Department to help develop and refine the droids' designs, then supervising our internal team as we planned and executed the build. We had an outstanding crew, and it was a great project to be part of.
Once the designs were finalized, I was responsible for painting and detailing both droids to match the director's vision. Since the characters are roughly 13 feet tall in the film, every surface treatment—from paint to weathering—had to be carefully scaled so the models would read convincingly as massive machines on screen. It's one of those subtle details that audiences rarely notice consciously, but it's essential to selling the illusion.
