The Holochess animation Easter egg in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was truly a labor of love, and the team who made it used a variety of interesting technologies to create it. This week, we return to Tippett Studio to chat with this sequence's art director, visual effects supervisor, armaturist, and head puppet fabricator (our very own Frank Ippolito!) about the fabrication of these stop-motion puppets!

Priest: not your average vampire movie

Good article about the making of the creatures. Gotta thank Blair, Scott and the production for giving me a mention for the Hive Guardian designs. Have a read.

  • Priest Wrapped, Smurfs and Season of the Witch in Progress

Finally wrapped on Priest, a film by the fine folks who brought you 'Legion'. i texture painted, art directed the creature build and designed the big baddie at the end.

Currently at Tippett I am heading up the Smurfs' Azrael build (as art director) with an awesome crew and moonlighting on the side helping to design the baddie that Nic Cage tangles with in the upcoming flick "Season of the Witch".

    Busy!

  • New Artwork on it's way!

Hi all, i've had a backlog of artwork I have been dying to post. Some of it will be freed up soon as one of the productions, Dean Devlin's 'Librarian 3' is going to air.

there's also some sci-fi stuff for an upcoming film and some concept stuff for other things that have stalled a bit.

    Keep looking back!

  • Cats and Dogs 2

    Hi all,

Recently, (Oct 13) I packed up and moved to the Bay Area (near San Fran) to begin work at Tippett Studios on 'Cats and Dogs 2'. I'm looking forward to working with some serious professionals, and getting better acquainted with fur tools.

  • Librarian 3

Currently, I am working on a few projects, the highlight of which is Dean Devlin's (Godzilla, The Patriot) Librarian 3, the latest installment in the popular Librarian' series starring Noah Wylie.

I should wrap up in July. I've been designing some interesting artifacts and locations. It's been great, and they are really happy with the work.

  • Sea Monsters Wins VES award!

I just got back from the sunny climes of Los Angeles after attending the Visual Effects Society's 6th annual awards ceremony.

Sean Phillips (director), Jack Geist (producer) and myself were on hand to accept the award for Best VFX in a Special Venue Project for Sea Monsters.

It's quite heavy, but I'm really honored and humbled. Hats off to the crew, who did a stunning job. It was a hard slog, 4k stereo EVERYTHING is no mean feat, and everyone should be doubly proud of their achievements.

  • SEA MONSTERS nominated for a VES award.

The SEA MONSTERS team has been nominated for the 6th Annual VES Awards ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, television, commercials and video games. Nominees were chosen Saturday, January 5, 2008 by numerous panels of VES members who viewed submissions at the FotoKem screening facilities in Burbank.

We're nominated in the 'Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project' category.

    SEA MONSTERS
Sean Phillips, Jack Geist, Robin Aristorenas, Mark Dubeau

Robin Aristorenas represents the CVFX team, while I represent DAMNFX and our awesome crew! The ceremony will be held on February 10, and i doubly cool because Steven Spielberg has been chosen to receive the VES Lifetime Achievement Award at the 6th Annual VES Awards on Feb. 10, 2008 at the Kodak Grand Ballroom in Hollywood. AND Harrison Ford will be there. Hope he brings the whip.
